Carbon Monoxide Alarms - Are You Ready?

A legal requirement for all rental properties - legislation coming soon.

What is the background?

The introduction of compulsory carbon monoxide detectors in all Australian homes gained further momentum in March this year. Federal MP, Sharman Stone introduced a Bill that was passed in Federal Parliament with overwhelming support after Mooroopna brothers Chase and Tyler Robinson died of carbon monoxide poisoning last May.

The Bill requires all residential properties with gas appliances (gas heaters, stoves etc) be fitted with carbon monoxide alarms to alert occupants of potentially deadly gas emissions – the invisible poison.

When will landlords be impacted?

The timing surrounding the implementation of this legislation is still unclear and governing bodies are yet to determine exact requirements and specifications regarding the number of alarms, location of alarms and exacting Australian standards regarding which alarms will be satisfactory for the application. We are communicating with the relevant bodies to ensure that we are prepared and ready to go when our agents and landlords need our support.

"The new regulations will come into force in eight to 12 months when legislation in all states and territories complies with the new laws." (ABC News 3 March 2011)

How are we preparing to get you ready?
